Ex-girlfriend (some 3 years ago) calls tonight, in a fight with her boyfriend over some trivial issue. Comes over. Asks me why people get into relationships. Asks me what the point is, if it always brings the pain. I tell her that it's the same reason that we build cities, and have houses so close together. We're afraid of being alone. We're afraid of being in pain and having noone around who understands. I hug her, send her home, tell her to be nice to her boyfriend, because he didn't do anything wrong. I go home. I sit in my pain. We get into relationships because we have a basic need to have -someone- around who can understand our pain on a level that's more than superficial. (Needless to say, here I am, sharing my pain with you fine folk, in the hope that perhaps someone will understand.) |
