something's rotten in the state of california

we went to oregon. jon and i drove 3600miles allover the place. the dope is, oregon state parks rock. jon has a small "85 rv. small is 20 feet. so we stayed in oregon state parks. they are so frequent that you could stay in two or three per night in some places. in oregon, all state parks have hookups for you. at least electric and water, sometimes sewage also, for about $16 or $17, but often for $12. the park is clean, hot showers are free, and the place is immaculate. often they are located in breathtaking areas; mountains, seashore, miles of dunes, forests. nobody mans the incoming booth, so you check yourself in after choosing a site. the rangers DO NOT TOTE GUNS. they are scarce also. you can feel a friendly vibe, but you are left alone.
well, we got used to this, so it was a maximum culture shock to re-enter california. now whole areas are closed. in some counties have closed their dumpsites. for those who have never been there, a typical rv has a toilet. the toilet drains into a tank. the dishwater, or in extravagant models, the shower water, drains into another tank. then, after a day or several days, you dump that stuff into a "dump site" and start over.
dump site removal means that huge amounts of shit, literally, are gonna go....somewhere.
the california state parks are few and far between. we saw trash everywhere.
the camp hosts are people who stay there for free and in return, they greet people, answer questions, sell firewood, etc. in oregon they work too, sweeping leaves or picking up. not in california, no. in california there is an attitude(perhaps). don't do it if you can get away with it.
in fort bragg, we stopped at mackerrichker state park. this is a big one with hundreds of spaces near a beautiful beach, and filled with large, old monterey pines. only one loop is open, which is normal for the winter. we find a site. the place is about 1/3 full. i have been there before, one year ago, so i know my way to the (pay for time, but usually acceptable) showers. now the sickening shocker, the place is closed except for one stall. this place is the dirtiest shower i have ever seen. in one corner is a hairball the size of a football. the floor is covered with mud. there is some slime on the floor, looks like someone was into spitting. the stall has a melting bar of soap in one corner and black stripes are rising up the corners of the tile.
in samuel taylor state park in marin, the shower door was hacked apart with an axe. we witnessed the same thing in pfieffer state park in big sur a year ago. in california you can expect a ranger or two to be around, packing a pistol and a rifle. smoky is a cop in california. they are trained at a marine training camp.
oregon is a state that has been poor, very poor by california standards, for some years. but in oregon there are no apologies, no problem. the people of oregon take their parks seriously as a state treasure, which they are. there is a different attude there. they have a right to be proud of this, yet they are unassuming.

i have the distinct feeling that the parks in california are doomed. they sometimes apoligise in hand scrawled print at the tollbooths about lack of funds, cutbacks, etc. wouldn't you like to see the state of california audited? by someone from  perhaps england? the money in california is not lacking. think of the revenue that occurs for the state in one day. one day of 10cents/gallon gasoline tax alone? how about property tax, the malls alone? how about income tax? how about 6 to 8 % sales tax on everything, EVERYTHING that is sold.  california is a little fascist state, acting just like big brother, by the rich for the rich, possess, lock out, and enslave. watch it dissappear, californians, on tv, where you will also be told how to feel about the whole thing.
