"oh, and landmark is a religion. It's just clipped and pruned to look like it isn't. Most of the major elements are there, sermons, ritual, community, high pressure evangalism, collection plates. I'll even venture to say the good elements of religion are even there, support group, social interraction... Landmark is religion with a marketing department, and their product is marketed to you, a new-age, young, successful, disillusioned, gen-Xer who's looking for meaning in life but hates organized religion because of their historical impurities, mythical figures, unscientific creationism theories, hypocracy, and zealotry. so... remove the holy book (because you can't give this stuff away, you've gotta make some mon-ay), the god symbol (we're not talking about god, too controvercial, cuts out our audience), and the saint symbol (a leader is a weakness that can be exploited), retain the charasmatic preacher and the strict adherance to social convention. Now throw together some philosophies and make them feel like they're finding out the secret to life and they'll keep on coming back for more. When they don't call them inscesantly. It's like telemarketing." |
